Bear Hunters!
Unfortunately, several years ago the uninformed voters of California saw fit to end hunting with dogs for bear and bobcat. Hunting for Mountain Lion was already completely forbidden in California. This has ended a way of life for many in California and will have a devastating effect on our wildlife and ecosystems.
All the predators in California are doing well, in spite of what the Media and Wildlife Officials would have us think. Ask those who venture into the woods often or those who live there as ranchers or farmers. They can testify as to their abundance and the devastation they leave behind. The Department of Fish and Wildlife kills, not just a few, Mountain Lions every year through Deprivation Permits, not to mention the number killed (legally) by ranchers and farmers protecting their livestock. Mountain Lions have become a threat to domestic animals and even people, as their natural prey become scarce. One such Mountain Lion was killed in Chico some years back over the bait of its downed prey; a young woman jogger in Upper Bidwell Park. Another was tracked down (with the use of dogs) and killed up near Shingle Town after having been wounded by a Grandfather defending his toddler Grandchild while she was playing in the backyard. It was the second time he had spotted the Lion stalking his grandchild. Because Mountain Lions are no longer hunted in California they no longer possess a healthy fear of human beings. Bobcats are destined for a similar fate.
Bears are not likely to attack humans unless startled or the person spooks a sow's cubs and the sow believes she needs to protect her young. However, bears are already having a devastating effect on the deer populations and other animals they find convenient to prey upon. Bears have the best nose in the woods; many times better than even a Blood Hound. They can smell a young fawn from miles away. And the smell of fresh blood from the birthing process will bring them in from anywhere downwind of the birthing site, and the forest is never without a breeze. During the fawning season, is when the bears are hungriest for protein. Just in the last few years the bear population has grown in geometric leaps and bounds. And for ever bear that survives the hunting season tens upon tens of infant fawns don't. Our deer population in California is aging, because hundreds upon hundreds of fawns are not making it to an age when they can run from danger. It's only a matter of time, and less than some imagine, before the deer populations all over California plumit to all-time lows.
So the good news to the bear hunter is, the bear populations throughout the Wilderness Areas of Northern California are thriving. As a matter of fact in many areas now, there are as many bear as there are deer.
